Lightning Protection Guide! How to Clean Canvas Bags to Prevent Color Bleeding or Deformation?
Mar 27, 2026
Although canvas bags are durable, if not properly washed and cared for, they will quickly turn into "salted vegetables" - with patterns cracking, the body shrinking, and the shoulder straps twisting into a knot. As someone who has washed and discarded three limited-edition canvas bags, I would like to share these painful lessons with you today.
First, don't skip the washing process and throw the clothes into the washing machine. The vigorous agitation during machine washing will cause the canvas fibers to become loose, resulting in the collapse of the garment shape and the easy detachment of the prints over a large area. The correct approach is to wash by hand in cold water, using a mild and neutral detergent. Let it soak for no more than 10 minutes, and gently rub the stained areas.
Secondly, do not wring it out! This is the most crucial step. The wringing action will cause the shoulder straps to distort and deform, and they will never return to their original state. The correct way is: use a large towel to roll up the bag and press it to absorb the water, then lay it flat to dry. Remember not to expose it to direct sunlight, as ultraviolet rays are the main cause of fading.
Thirdly, for printed items, they should be "turned inside out for washing". For canvas bags with patterns, when washing, turn the bag inside out. Only wash the inner lining to reduce friction on the front side, which can effectively extend the lifespan of the printing.
If you can achieve these three points, your canvas bag will last for at least three more years. How many canvas bags have you washed out? Let's discuss it in the comments section!
